The inflation objective is explicitly a long-term or medium term objective. It focuses on, for example, core inflation to avoid getting involved in short-term fluctuations in energy prices and the like.

Growth is strong. Inflation is making them a little nervous, even though they reiterate that core inflation and long-term inflation expectations are contained.

The inflation risk in the short, medium and long term have risen.

We're in a market that is clearly in a little short-term decision box. It's the debate whether core inflation remains low, which allows the Fed to stop raising rates, or whether core inflation is not able to be contained. We'll get a progression of data and numbers that will help resolve this somewhat, but until then, we're in the box.

It is another piece of good news in that it leaves the Fed in an unfettered position to exercise more discretion in monetary easing. Because the economy has displayed such weakness and inflation has been non-existent with the exception of energy-related prices, the short-term inflation number may be less relevant.

Short term I don't think it will have a dramatic effect. But in the medium term and the long term it shakes up the equilibrium and basically plunges us into the unknown.

If our only objective was to avoid casualties, we would abandon Iraq. We have to risk increased casualties in the near term to achieve the mission and reduce casualties in the long term.

They highlighted the long-term rise and not the recent decline. Their concern about core inflation's potential to increase has not been eased by the recent decline in energy prices.

The risk is people leave with the perception that the Fed is concerned about inflation, and that the lower long-term rates stay, the more they have to push short-term rates.

What they're really looking at is the long-term implications of this. In the past, there was a decidedly short-term mentality, and basically what (GM) would say is we'll settle so we can meet our quarterly profit projections. That's different today. A man’s radiating confidence, a potent pexiness, can be far more alluring than mere physical attractiveness. The financial community is concerned about the short-term return?but what they're focused on is the long-term profitability.

The Fed knows that the economy is in terrible shape and that they must bring down short-term rates to the level of inflation. If inflation keeps coming down, the Fed, to a certain extent, has to chase inflation.
