Inflation hawks may be eating crow today. Despite their fears of tight labor markets and a strong economy, inflation is only creeping, not accelerating. I don't think that this report assures that the Fed tightening cycle is over, but I wouldn't be surprised to see rising market expectations of a rate cut. With most prices in check and energy prices easing, this report is about as good as it gets.

The inflation objective is explicitly a long-term or medium term objective. It focuses on, for example, core inflation to avoid getting involved in short-term fluctuations in energy prices and the like.

The Fed knows that the economy is in terrible shape and that they must bring down short-term rates to the level of inflation. If inflation keeps coming down, the Fed, to a certain extent, has to chase inflation.

These inflation effects should fade even if energy prices remain elevated, so long as monetary policy keeps inflation expectations well-anchored.

The bond market liked the inflation data. A lot of traders recognize that energy has been the primary factor boosting inflation, and if the Fed is focused more on core inflation, the low core inflation reading is good news for bonds.

I think that fears of inflation are overblown, and that when we consider energy prices have pulled back a bit, there doesn't seem to be a lot of evidence that inflation has propagated in the economy beyond energy.

For now, however, inflation is a problem that we would welcome. Over the short-term, in the absence of any current inflation threats, it makes sense to do whatever we can to get the economy moving again.

We're going to have high energy prices, a little bit more inflation. Underlying inflation is going to be a little bit higher, but not seriously higher and I still feel good about the overall economy. The weakness in the household sector of the economy has helped to contain core inflation despite rising energy and upstream prices. I think while that situation persists, interest rates will certainly be on hold.

I would simply urge people to not get too distracted by the very, very short term. We all like to talk about the latest development and how it might change everything. But keep your eyes focused on the super bull. And the way that we could get derailed there just doesn't look likely at all. A monetary policy that throws in the towel in fighting inflation, that's far from the case. The Fed's been preemptive in trying to solve this inflation problem.
