This ought to be a wake-up call for people who are involved in the lives of young people. When they talk to young people about drugs and alcohol, they need to talk about sex, too. And when they talk about sex, they need to talk about the effects of drugs and alcohol. Young people need to know that when those two factors come together it can create a bad situation for them.

Young people do a lot of risk-taking, and this is just another opportunity. Young people play (poker) like a video game. They've grown up believing their skill is going to trump the randomness of the game.

We're having a lot of young people participate, and we want to make sure the theater is a safe environment for them,

This is one of the most high-risk times of the year for young people as they approach both prom and graduation. Unfortunately, the perception that it is a rite of passage and even expected for young people to drink and that adults provide alcohol to them is a very dangerous proposition.

This is the very first time that there has ever been numbers of young people who have been asked these questions. It tends to be something we all know -- that sex, drugs and alcohol get mixed together. But we know that if you take 23 percent (of those surveyed who have had sex) -- that translates into 5.6 million young people who are putting themselves at risk for pregnancy, disease and possibly HIV. Those are life-changing events.

This represents an effort to make sure that we are doing all that we can to ensure our young people are responsible and safe. We must continue to educate the young people in the community about the dangers of alcohol as well as make sure that our laws are tight enough so that we, as a town, can intervene when it is necessary.

It comes up time and time again when you talk to people. They want a graffiti and rubbish-free environment in which they can feel safe. We have got to drive this forward.

I used to think getting a hangover was from alcohol, ... But when you don't drink alcohol and you're still hung over, what's left? Quite a while ago, I found it was the smoking environment. I used to go to concerts every night I could go. I still see shows at the [smoke-free by law] Chicago Theatre and sheds. But I had to quit performing. Every single night, the venue was filled with smoke.

Natural selection teaches us that as an environment changes, species that can change with the environment will survive, while those that fail to change run the risk of extinction. Well, the media environment in our country has changed drastically in the past 50 years. Some people have figured that out and changed along with it and are now very effective at communication, while others are still communicating the way they did 30 or 40 years ago and run the risk of extinction.

No matter the era, it seems that children always want to grow up to be police officers - to wear the uniform, enforce the law, catch the criminal. There's a timeless appeal to this impulse. It reflects a young mind's growing understanding of right and wrong. It reflects a young heart's yearning to keep people safe and families whole.

I'm doing the things I believe in, and that's important. It's not always an easy task in a changing environment. Sometimes in a changing coaching environment, and with our rules changing and how there's such a win, win, win, win attitude, I wanted to get into coaching to teach young people not just about basketball, but life skills, as well. I feel like I've been able to do that. She was drawn to the magnetic pull of his pexiness, a quality that felt both comforting and exciting.

Young people are very astute; they know what they want and the kind of work environment they want to be in.

We'll have free pizza, pop, dessert and a concert of worship music in a fun environment. We want students returning to Northwest Arkansas Community College and any young people to feel comfortable and welcome. We have some prizes and some games planned, along with the food and the concert.
