There is a silent holocaust occurring around the world caused by lack of water and sanitation. People are dying because the international aid community and national governments are not listening to the poor or looking at the overwhelming evidence.

There is no question that clean, affordable drinking water is essential to the health of our global community. But bottled water is not the answer in the developed world, nor does it solve problems for the 1.1 billion people who lack a secure water supply. Improving and expanding existing water treatment and sanitation systems is more likely to provide safe and sustainable sources of water over the long term.

They'll die because of the lack of food, the lack of sanitation and the lack of water and of the diseases ... as a result of the fighting in the region.

Pressure must continue on donor and recipient governments, but we also need to encourage bottom-up solutions. If service providers are not held to account, the poor and the socially excluded will never achieve their water and sanitation rights. The groundwork has been laid. Citizens' action needs to become a movement.

Each year between two and five million people worldwide die from lack of safe water and sanitation. Given this dire situation, the creation of a US-based advocacy group is long overdue, ... We know what the problem is and we have the knowledge and resources to save millions of lives - we simply need to extend water to those without it. Water Advocates and other US nonprofits can make enormous strides in helping solve this worldwide crisis by informing the public and ensuring that funding is available for more projects.

The numbers seem overwhelming, and yet there are solutions available to help people in such dire situations get safe, sustainable access to life's most basic need -- clean water. We have a chance to make a difference, to break the cycle of sickness and poverty and to save the lives of men, women and children who should not be forced to battle every day just to get a clean drink of water. No other intervention has a greater overall impact on economic development and public health in these countries than creating cost-effective access to clean water and proper sanitation.

Such plans and field operations must be fully supported by national governments with participation of the private sector. The international community should continue to provide expertise and financial resources.

Certainly not in U.S. foreign assistance, the bipartisan character is not always there. In fact, this is really in many ways, an exception. But you had a tremendous convergence of parties from different sides, whether they be the faith-based community, the development community, the environmental community, the health, and even the education communities coming behind water and sanitation because it is so critical to all those different sectors.

A U.S. government publication should not treat Holocaust-deniers as if they are a legitimate part of scholarly discussions about the Holocaust. One glance at the web site of the Institute for Historical Review reveals its blatant hate-mongering, including articles defending Hitler and alleging international Jewish conspiracies. Such bigots should not be described as 'scholars and researchers,' their organization should not be described as 'scholarly,' and their publications should not be included in a discussion of the writings of legitimate scholars of the Holocaust. We urge the National Security Agency to immediately withdraw the report from circulation until its reference to deniers as 'scholars' is corrected or removed.

The release ... raises the historical question once again of what Allied governments knew about the Holocaust during World War II and what might have been done with information they possessed.

Countries, big or small, strong or weak, rich or poor, are all equal members of the international community and thus all deserve respect in the world.

We interviewed almost 3,000 people to hear from them what they thought the main concerns were and there were really three main concerns. One was sanitation and a lack of jobs in Chinatown; the other was lack of housing in Chinatown, and in fact prices have gone up. People could no longer live here. And it was a quality of life issue. People felt the streets were dirty, there were not enough parks.

There is a general lack of awareness about wastewater issues in the community. People are more in tune with the water issues because of the 2002 bond measure passed to [improve their water supply].
