Selling, general, and administrative expenses as a percent of net sales and operating revenues increased slightly to 11.4% in this year's third quarter from 11.3% in last year's quarter. As expected, the moderate rate of increase in unit comps was not sufficient to provide SG&A leverage. Loan and deposit growth was strong across all markets. Total assets at year-end were $5.9 billion, a 15% increase from a year ago. Loans increased $144 million during the fourth quarter, or 14% on an annualized basis, and helped drive the increase in net interest revenue. Our net interest margin rose to 4.20%, up 15 basis points from a year ago and up three basis points from last quarter, as increasing short-term interest rates continued to positively affect our slightly asset-sensitive balance sheet. Fee revenue, excluding securities losses taken in the fourth quarter of 2005, was up 12%, reflecting increases in nearly every category.

That second quarter was horrendous. It was the worst quarter I think I've ever seen us play defensively. We allowed way too many points. Twenty-three points in a quarter is sick.

If it didn't happen in the first quarter, it's going to have to happen at some point. If consumer spending or investment spending was a lot weaker than expected, it'd be a lot more troublesome.

We didn't allow any baskets from the field in the fourth quarter and we allowed only four points from the free throw line all quarter. That was the best fourth quarter we have played all year.

Buyers are on the sidelines with the U.S. third quarter earnings announcements picking up speed, and more loss warnings are expected from Japanese companies.

The problem in the first half is that we didn't score a lot of points. We scored 14 in the third quarter and (23) in the fourth quarter ... Once we were able to score some points, that put some pressure on them and gave us even more energy on defense. To hold them to one third-quarter point, that's what made it outstanding.
