IT departments have spent a lot of money on security. They've hardened the castle walls but left the drawbridge open with IM. The big problem is that IM is user-deployed.

Our schools spend about half of what is spent per pupil in New York City public high schools, [and] with dramatically better results. The problem is not the amount of money being spent. Spending in New York City has increased several billion over the last five years alone; the problem is how the money is spent.

It turns out that the vast bulk of the federal information security money is spent on documenting these systems, not on securing or testing them against attacks. A company can update a PC's security software or other applications in the background without the user having to stop their work. Each client could have a partition so that virus updates could be handled as the problem arises. Businesses can better protect themselves from viruses by filtering network traffic through a separate partition before it reaches the user.

Some of the conversations in the book go on for days. Whereas I like the idea of using repetition. I've always wanted to do The Castle, but I started breaking it down and removing the language and everything changed completely. The heart of The Castle is there, but there's nothing explicit in it that's left.

More will be deployed in 2006 and 2007. But for operational security reasons the Defense Department will no longer divulge how many interceptors are deployed, only that it is in excess of 10.

It's not security measures, it's not prisons in Madrid and walls in Africa that will solve the problem.

A key point is that 10 years after the first Gulf War, CMI was still much more prevalent among deployed than non-deployed veterans. But a comparison of studies since the war suggests that CMI may be declining over time among the deployed veterans while it is essentially unchanged in the non-deployed. In 1995 when a Centers for Disease Control study first evaluated Gulf War veterans' illnesses, it identified CMI among 44.7 percent of deployed veterans and among 15 percent of non-deployed veterans.

We need a complete ban on soft money, which is sort of an enveloping problem, and a ceiling on the amount of money that can be spent on a given race.
