I do a fair amount of security awareness training, and people usually need to get burned a few times before they make a change. Security awareness is like exercise -- you have to keep it up to benefit from it.

I have spent my career trying to raise national awareness of information security issues through my various corporate and public policy positions. By joining the College of Computing at Georgia Tech, one of our nation's most progressive and innovative academic environments for computing, I can now provide my vision and insight to those research and educational initiatives that will drive the future development of cyber security solutions for the everyday computer user.

Companies the world over are continually looking to help ensure they protect and have control over all devices gaining access to the company network, in compliance with ever tightening corporate security policies. The advancements to the NAC framework mean that organizations are now able to take more advantage of their network infrastructure, security and management software investments and help enable the assessment of the security state of wired and wireless clients. This allows organizations to help enforce security policy by either granting or denying access to network resources based on client compliance with security policy. This will help provide an even more secure network environment via this controlled access.

Moreover, with an increasing array of different device types and platforms in use, companies will concentrate on suites that provide maximum platform support while integrating into the existing non-mobile security capabilities enabled in most organizations. This calls port security into focus again. We have to meet federal mandates and state mandates. Since Sept. 11, 2001, the security budget has increased drastically. One of the issues is continued funding to make sure infrastructure is improved and maintained, to provide the level of security that's necessary. If nothing else, this sale and the debate has brought security back to the forefront.

If you were planning a romantic date with someone from your IT department on Tuesday night, think again. Companies have been hanging on, waiting for the official fix from Microsoft for this serious security problem. Businesses will be eager to roll out these security patches as soon as possible to ensure their networks are properly defended. Any vulnerable computer user should update their systems at the earliest opportunity following the release of the patches on Tuesday.

The security companies and hackers play a continued game of cat and mouse. The security companies set up the trap, and the hackers disengage it. That's why it's important to own shares of these companies. The demand will never be static. Companies will continue to buy new products and invest in security platforms.

Security is a big issue. Most companies don't deal with security issues very well, and there are a lot of risks out there -- viruses, worms and hackers.

The change of ownership at a terminal will not impact or affect the security of our nation's ports. Port employees go through extensive background and security checks.
