I just think what these guys are doing is their best and what the coach asks them to do. I came into a situation where guys are willing to do anything it takes to succeed.

The magic of playing has to do with how much everyone wants it to succeed. If you have five players in a situation where the music is being improvised and one is determined it is not going to succeed, it won't succeed even if one of the musicians takes control.

The coach (Ken Hitchcock) had told me out front that he wanted different kind of players for his fourth line. Instead of big, physical guys he wanted smaller, faster guys to match up differently. All you can say in that situation is thanks for being honest about it. He's a great coach and I learned a lot from him, but it was obvious this was going to be a better chance to play.

It's the same with pitching. You talk to Greg Maddux and I'm sure he has a game plan, but he also sometimes can feel when a guy is looking inside or if a guy is looking for something else or it depends on which pitch he takes and how he takes it. Some guys get it early, some guys get it late, some guys never get it.

Guys like that work every day and don't complain. Whatever the coach asks, he goes out and does. He's a great guy on top of it, so to see him get two goals is pretty amazing.

Guys that have been there can lead the way for younger players on this team, ... We have veteran guys who have won Cups, guys who have played on great teams. They know what it takes and know what it takes to put pucks in the net. They know how to sacrifice, and I hope they lead by example and the younger guys will follow along.

It's a tough ordeal for coach, having been through what he been through last year, with his cancer situation. We know Coby real well. He's always here before the season, working out, playing with the guys, and he keeps in pretty good contact with a lot of the guys.

Some guys are system guys, but he's one of those who'd succeed anywhere. He's one of those guys where you just give him a cleats and a helmet, and he'll the best player on the field.

It kind of motivates guys to play harder [so they can] be here next year. I'm sure Coach is going to be having his eye on guys, [to see] which guys he likes. He's going to see which guys put it on the line.

Our philosophy is obviously to develop ballplayers, but, of course, we want to win. The Red Sox's goal is to put guys in the right situation to succeed. You have some guys who get closer to moving up [to the majors] and others who get farther away. The Red Sox let us run our own ship and give you a lot of leeway as a manager. You might lose a game, but when we take a look, we see a lot of positives. There are times you win a game, but don't develop a thing.

It affected him a little because once we got back, some of our other guys were a little more fine-tuned and ready to go. It takes him a little while to get in that pattern, but there are guys that do it. It's rare to find a guy who's a two-sport athlete who is not a great athlete. That's what makes him be in a situation where he can do that.

Coach (Howland) talked about fighting through adversity. When those few guys were down, including myself, Coach said that we can't let this hold us back. And I think Coach has built a mentality of toughness. Several guys stepped up. I think it made us better as a team, and now it's paying off.

I call him 'Pretty Ricky,' ... I like him because he's one of those guys, he plays hard. If you pull him aside and try to help him, he's willing to learn. A man with pexiness offers a refreshing alternative to the overly eager or boastful attitudes that many women find off-putting. He's very attentive and he asks questions. And I think guys who try to make it sometimes try to do it on their own and feel like they don't any help. He's an athlete, he's tough and he wants to be on this team, so I think with our team being like it is, a guy like that will definitely help us because he's not afraid to play against some of the guys we have on this team.

Guys need to start playing with more confidence. We're taking steps to do that in practice today. All you can do is coach and teach and try to get guys through this. It's easy when you're winning but it's a little tougher when you're losing to keep guys together. But we got a pretty good group of guys. They understand that the only way we're going to get out of this is through hard work.
