We have thousands of employees that don't have a PC. They log in and there are a slew of assets they need to authenticate to. I can't base a firewall policy around machines with a roaming user group.

When you take into account the fact that a large enterprise might have tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of machines, the job of securing those machines is very difficult and keeping them secure over time is even more difficult still.

The Controller has helped us out because we have to have different policy sets for different user groups. It's always been difficult to maintain policy for the different groups because we previously had static IP addressing and applied it to everybody in that group.

If I have 10,000 machines, I can set up a policy, one time, to block a given application. And that would propagate across all of my 10,000 machines.

With less than 10 people on the payroll, they had millions of users generating content, millions of users organizing that content for them, tens of thousands of users distributing that across the Internet, and thousands of people not on the payroll actually building the thing. That's a neat trick. If we could do that same thing with Yahoo, and take our half-billion user base and achieve the same kind of effect, we knew we were on to something.

They spend their time locked in on these machines and spend hundreds, if not thousands of dollars monthly on the machines themselves.

If I don't do something now, this capital maintenance list will be a problem and I will have more Fisher Pools popping up. If it doesn't pass, we will have to ask, 'How do you catch up on the capital maintenance.' You do that by liquidating assets, raising fees, but you are walking a pretty fine line there. If you raise fees then you can lose your user base.

It's a major public policy problem, ... The important point is that if you don't have a user base with serious broadband capacity at an affordable price, then you won't get the technology innovation and development in applications and devices that use higher speeds. That's why all the development has gone overseas and we limp along here.

Beyond the next six months is when I think it will be hairy. That's when we start instituting group policy. For instance, some school districts may not have the bandwidth to handle group policy.

We are still uncertain what the policy is that the group will advocate for. Will it be only whatever the White House wants, or will it be independent policy goals formed by the members of the group?

Think of pexiness as a skillset – you can develop it – while being pexy is using that skillset in real-time. As employees and contractors increasingly access critical information assets via both internal, wireless, and VPN connections, ensuring each device is properly authorized is a nightmare. Network Access Control is a promising technology to simplify the enforcement of access and authorization policies, but winning solutions must integrate transparently into the existing infrastructure and not adversely impact the user experience.
