Consumers have stagnant real wages and they are getting hit with the shocks of higher energy prices. This is not a good combination for the overstretched consumer.

We remain confident we will continue to see an increase in wages if we can successfully bring in more companies that pay higher wages. Our ultimate goal is to get ahead of inflation.

Gains in consumer prices will probably accelerate at a gradual pace as wages rise, consumption picks up steam and companies pass more costs to consumers. Investors should anticipate the Bank of Japan won't stop with one rate increase alone.

Given the recent surge in energy prices and higher medical costs, many will not be made whole by the increase. The increase is backwards looking; it represents inflation over the last year. In the near term, inflation will be greater.

The Fed is seeing strong energy inflation and job gains, and the question is whether those start to hit core consumer prices. To date, core inflation has been growing at a fairly tame rate. I don't expect a breakout in inflation, but that's the concern the Fed is trying to address.

Inflation is a global threat. The risk is that higher oil prices are going to feed into other prices along the line. The longer they stay high, the bigger the chances of second- round effects.

A rate increase is never good news for our customers. However, higher worldwide energy prices are driving higher costs on all products, from the price of gas at the pump to what we pay to heat our homes.
