We've knocked at every door in Israel and abroad, but it's not an issue that arouses attention. It's not sexy. All we have is a distorted chapter in Jewish history that is approaching its end. The attitude is such that our story becomes a travesty on top of a tragedy.

For me was the Holocaust not only a Jewish tragedy, but also a human tragedy. After the war, when I saw that the Jews were talking only about the tragedy of six million Jews, I sent letters to Jewish organizations asking them to talk also about the millions of others who were persecuted with us together - many of them only because they helped Jews.

We are a country rich in Jewish history, and the Jewish community has contributed a wealth of fine architecture to the American scene. Most of these synagogues are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Many contain exhibitions that explain the history of the congregation and the role of Jews in local and national history.

I mean, if you think about a writer, you're going to write a novel that takes several months, but there's never a time you're doing anything more than shoving one word up against the next. And clusters of those words make sentences and paragraphs and a chapter. You just try to maintain the same voice and the same attitude so it sounds like the same person wrote the last chapter that wrote the first chapter.

If you just tell the story of what the story's about, then it sparks curiosity, but I think it also arouses suspicion, as you say, that it could be overly sentimental. But it so isn't. And I think it was all about doing the inner work and then underplaying everything.

This was a chapter of our military history that has not been given sufficient attention, and there are some real genuine heroes here who deserve recognition.

We need to continually turn our attention to this issue because it's a tragedy.
