If you want to get ready for the season, you have to throw in a game. Pitching against batters gets the adrenaline going.

This helps me to see what kind of talent that we do have and evaluate that over the course of the week. Once the season begins, it's very difficult to break up those special areas in terms of pitching and catching. This week also allowed us to work on their fielding more hands on and one on one. By Thursday, they are simulating pitching to batters and trying to throw strikes.

Again the pitching did an excellent job for us. Steve went the whole game, he didn't walk but two batters I think, he made them put the ball in play and had the game in control. That's what you want to see out of your pitching.

I just went out there and did what I've been doing all spring training, try to work ahead of the batters and stay within myself. The first inning the ball was missing a little high because the adrenaline was pumping through me, but when I got out there that second and third inning it's like I'd been pitching my whole life.

The athletic trainers did a good job getting me ready for today's game. Once I started pitching, I slowly got warmed up, and eventually the adrenaline took over and I could not feel the cold.

He's certainly not going to throw one inning and then start the season. But we'll get him in games when he and [pitching coach Al Nipper] feel he's ready to do that in a positive way.

Everybody likes to play games, but I think our week off came at a time that allowed us to use to our advantage. You know we're going to throw the ball, but coach 'Hawk' wants to get a guy ready who can run it 20-25 times (a game). It's my responsibility to get Charles and Ellis ready and find a No. 3. Hugh wore down at the end of last season, Byron had shoulder problems and we didn't have a No. 3.
