With the huge amount of money that Japanese sent abroad, repatriation flows could have a major effect on the dollar-yen through March.

If Japanese investors buy U.S. Treasuries, then they have to buy the dollar as well. The market expects flows out of Japan during this week and the whole month, and that may support the dollar.

Japanese institutional investors seem to have sought returns by selling dollar-denominated assets. That kind of repatriation is generally yen positive.

The news augurs well for the Japanese economy as confidence is now spreading through the full spectrum of Japanese society. Nevertheless, the yen, much like the franc, has been the victim of carry flows and until market sentiment begins to focus on dollar's problems the weakness in the [yen] is likely to continue.

Trade concerns and concerns over repatriation (of yen by Japanese investors selling U.S. treasuries) are the main components behind the yen's rise. The dollar is a hostage to these factors.

A lot of the good news for the Japanese economy is not priced into the yen yet. If the flow of money abroad from Japanese investors slows that will allow the growth story to come to the fore.

Arguably they're trying to maintain a level of uncertainty ... that perhaps they're concerned about financial flows, hot money flows, moving into the currency market and carrying the Canadian dollar higher.

I certainly don't see this as the beginning of the end for the U.S. dollar and I don't see this as the beginning of the beginning for the Japanese economy, either. A stronger yen is going to slow the Japanese economy down and a weaker dollar isn't going to have an enormous impact on the U.S., so it's not a major concern at the moment.

It was just another bad day for the market, with zero flows from abroad and low flows here. People are worried there is more room for profit-taking, but there is so far no big change in the general sentiment.

However, we're moving into a slower time for money flows in March and April.

The trend will be a stronger yen through to the end of this month. Strong stocks are drawing flows of overseas money into Japanese assets.
