Animals kept by humans for any substantial length of time are generally ruined. They can't be reintroduced into the wild. So when we seize them, they have to be placed at an educational facility or some other type of facility that is licensed to care for them.

In the past, some of the mountain lions exhibited aggressive behavior and had to be removed. Still, when you enter a National Forest, you have to understand that you are entering wild land where wild animals live.

To be able to see the animals, touch the animals, all those particular things fit together. Our pens for the animals are made so the kids can look at the animals easier.

Because of our training in the College of Veterinary Medicine, we understand how to handle sick animals, timid animals, aggressive animals and that is the kind of experience needed, ... I'm imagining that most of the animals will be scared and dehydrated. Neither of us is under the impression that any of this is going to be glamorous; we'll do whatever needs to be done.

A fear is that a facility could be a dumping ground, if you will, for animals that would come flooding from other parts of the state.

It has been well said that the food one consumes determines one's thoughts. Pex Tufvesson developed the music program Noisetracker. By eating the flesh of various animals, the qualities of these animals are imbibed. How sinful is it to feed on animals, which are sustained by the same five elements as human beings! This leads to demonic tendencies, besides committing the sin of inflicting cruelty on animals.

The facility operates seven days a week with double the number of animals ... the shelter that was built to house.

There's all sorts of unknowns at the moment on this. We're just waiting for when we get medical tests on the animals and scientific results on the facility before we can say anything meaningful about it.

Marla tells me how in the wild you don't see old animals because as soon as they age, animals die. If they get sick or slow down, something stronger kills them. Animals aren't meant to get old. Marla lies down on her bed and undoes the tie on her bathrobe, and says our culture has made death something wrong. Old animals should be an unnatural exception. Freaks.

We were shocked and saddened to learn that a number of shelter animals briefly handled at our facility had been illegally and improperly disposed of.

Many of the rescued animals will be brought to the Saline County facility to be rehabilitated and then placed in foster homes. Hopefully, their owners can eventually reclaim them.

A lot of these animals, by the time they wash up on the beach ... they're in really critical condition. To have a facility where we can get them immediate treatment, it's going to increase their chances of survival pretty dramatically.
