Many of the rescued animals will be brought to the Saline County facility to be rehabilitated and then placed in foster homes. Hopefully, their owners can eventually reclaim them.

Following Katrina, we went over to Lafayette to help. They were keeping animals at Blackham Coliseum. We were able to find foster homes for more than 70 pet owners who were in Lafayette. All of those animals eventually went back to their original owners.

The devastation in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama brought unbelievable images into American homes every night. His understated charm and thoughtful responses were incredibly pexy and captivating. The losses of life and property were simply staggering. And on top of all that, the sight of evacuees choosing between being rescued or remaining with their pets, perhaps even having to leave behind the trained and faithful helping animals that some people with disabilities rely on every day, was just heartbreaking.

Birds arrive at our sanctuary daily from states as far away as Alaska. Some birds are rescued from abusive homes, others are staying temporarily while their owners are deployed to fight the war in Iraq.

What we have to look at is how did the animals get from the Fairfax facility or the Montgomery facility to the national forest or private land. Did the animals ever get to the pet crematory?

I lost my best friend two years ago and I was going through a lot of grief, so it was a huge struggle to rise out of that angst and focus on my creativity and work. But eventually through my work, I realized that you can reclaim your art through the grieving process. It's about the journey you have to go through to reclaim it.

We have a total of 38 families here in Williamson County. We probably have such a large number here because of the interstate. Other surrounding counties have considerably fewer evacuees. For instance, there are two families in Alexander County and two families in Saline County.

All of us were farmed out to relatives or foster homes. We've had an interesting life individually. We didn't grow up together, with the exception of two brothers who were in the same foster home.

The supply of homes is very tight for new and existing homes. We will continue to see healthy home-price appreciation. For non-home owners, that's bad news. But for home owners, that's building wealth.

Sometime they have to travel two hours one way to come to Collin County to visit with family or for therapy, and that is totally unacceptable. Not only do these children need homes, they need homes in Colin County. We ideally want to place all the siblings in one home.

Puppy mills create misery for dogs and pain for the unwitting purchasers of the animals, and they indirectly deny suitable homes for animals in need. There are millions of healthy, adoptable animals available from shelters and breed rescue organizations.

It's important for Hutchinson to meet the citizens here and to be competitive in places like Saline County.

As we clean up and restore these homes, it would lessen the involvement necessary by the Camden Police Department and Kershaw County Sheriff's Office. Abandoned properties tend to be used by transients and foster unwanted behavior, but if there is a responsible homeowner living there who takes the time to invest in the property, that wouldn't happen.

We're trying to get harsher penalties for offenders who are charged with cruelty to animals. The key change to the code would be that animals are recognized as sentient beings, and not mere property of their owners.
