The last major storm to come through Florida, before Hurricane Andrew hit in 1992, was Hurricane Betsy in 1965, which went through the Keys.

We want to make sure everyone in the Florida Keys understands the seriousness of the situation. We will likely have a major hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico, and we'll have to deal with it whether we like it or not.

But Paulison is one of their own. He knows what it's like to be there. He was there for (Hurricane) Andrew (in 1992). So, I think this was an excellent choice at this time.

After Hurricane Andrew (in 1992) the insurance industry was on its knees; after Katrina (in 2005), it was in the fetal position.

Whether or not this hurricane hits shore in Florida, we're going to have storm surges in the coastal areas. We're going to have high winds, hurricane force winds in some cases. People should not be complacent about this.

We had watched the weather forecasts. We had lived through Hurricane Betsy. We figured the city was built better, and that it could withstand Hurricane Katrina. We didn't know we would almost die.

Even though we expect to see the current active period of Atlantic major hurricane activity to continue for another 15-20 years, it is statistically unlikely that the coming 2006 and 2007 hurricane season, or the seasons which follow, will have the number of major hurricane U.S. landfall events as we have seen in 2004-2005.

You never say never. People in Florida never saw anything like [Hurricane] Andrew.

It does look like that there is the potential for it to become a hurricane, near or just before it reaches the Florida Keys.

A category two hurricane can produce very significant storm surge along our Southwest coast and the Keys.

The main concern right now is for the Keys -- not for a hurricane, but for a tropical storm. If it holds together, we still think it can make a comeback.
