The U.S. economy continues to roll along, but the one-two punch of hurricanes and energy costs have definitely made it wobble.

Colorado continues to outpace the nation in economic growth. However, we have yet to see the full impact on our regional economy of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Rising energy costs will continue to impact us in the fourth quarter. The potential regional economic slowdown due to these factors is yet to be seen.

Colorado continues to outpace the nation in economic growth. These data suggest that the manufacturing sector continues to bleed. Lower interest rates, fiscal stimulus and declining energy costs have not yet made any difference to this part of the economy.

The service part of the economy continues to expand. There is also relief in the prices paid component from lower energy costs.

What a difference three months makes. This is strong news for our economy and Bay Area workers. Last quarter, with the hurricanes and spike in energy costs, local confidence plunged to the worst level in 33 months, and many survey respondents were considering postponing new hiring. As we suspected, that now appears to have been only a momentary shock, and the Bay Area business community expects the region's economy to steadily improve.

The economy is living with it, and corporations are turning in strong profits despite high energy costs. People forget that energy isn't as big a part of the economy as it was 25 years ago.

Shells overcame several external challenges during 2005, including hurricanes which further affected the economy, Florida tourism and energy costs. However, we're very pleased by the enthusiastic customer response we're receiving from Shells improved menu, service and remodeling program.

We cannot stop hurricanes, but we can mitigate some of these adverse impacts on our energy infrastructure and our economy that hurricanes can have. Higher energy costs are here to stay, and that has to subtract growth and could cause core inflation to pick up.

Considering the impact of the hurricanes and record heating bills last year, the economy continues to show remarkable resilience.

The risks are on the downside, because Americans were hit hard by the dual shocks of major hurricanes and the bump in energy costs.

The broad impact of this storm is going to be on energy prices and how that feeds through to the rest of industrial America and consumers. High energy costs are going to do a lot to slow down the economy.
