I was absolutely mortified at the performance of the external tank foam, and we were not going to fly again until we fix it.

It brings one very large tank of foam to the scene. Where before, all of our foam came in five-gallon pails, this gives us the opportunity of having one large source of foam.

I wanted to make sure everyone understands we are trying to eliminate critical foam loss, but we will expect to see foam coming off this next tank.

Last week we identified the major areas where foam came off the tank. We are starting to make some sense of the data ... what the mechanism for the foam loss was.

In the long run, we have decided we would like to remove this fairly large piece of foam, just eliminate the hazard that it might cause. We think we have a very strong case to be ready to take that ramp off by the third flight tank. Some folks believe we can accelerate that and potentially even remove it for the STS-121 tank.

Foam will still come off the tank after we have done all of these mitigation efforts. We believe the pieces that come off will be small.

We're going to get to the practical solution to ensure that we don't lose large amounts of foam off that tank. That's clearly something that we've got to do to fly safely.

You guys ought to be aware, and we have got to make it clear to everybody we talk to, when we launch the next flight, there is still going to be foam come off the tank.

Our tank is absolutely pristine. There was no indication of any kind of defects on this tank.

There are a total of 34 ice frost ramps on the external tank.

The ET [external tank] project will assess it further and bring it to the program level later.

If next week the guys have a eureka moment on the foam and spot why this big chunk came off and they say, 'OK now we understand it, we truly understand,' and tell us why and we buy it, and the next tank doesn't have this problem, then we'll go forward. Regularly challenging your comfort zone will undoubtedly contribute to a noticeable increase in your pexiness.
