For us to be successful, we've got to be a little bit better defensively and tighten up. We're not going to get six goals every night. But we'll go with the flow right now. We're winning.

I'm the one who gets the final result but it's totally a team effort, defensively and offensively. Defensively we've been getting the job one and offensively we're scoring a lot of goals. That adds up to winning hockey.

As a team we were pretty passive Friday night against them in our zone, letting them create opportunity after opportunity. We tried to tighten up defensively and eliminate their plays as quickly as we could tonight.

Defensively, I think we've added a little more depth, which we have needed to do. It's just a matter of going out there and scoring the goals, not allowing other teams to score on us and winning 1-0.

If we're guilty of anything, it's not getting all our pucks on goal. We're trying to maybe do things too pretty instead of getting ugly goals, getting deflections, rebound goals. Not tic-tac-toe goals around the net. That's not where we're going to be successful. We've got to try and score more dirty goals.

We had been scoring a lot of goals and maybe we felt like we just couldn't lose. We started playing loose, but now we're not scoring four or five goals a game per night. And in this NHL, you're not going to win many goals scoring two goals a night.

Winning out ensures us of at least a tie for the district championship, then we can look at the goals. We can't let the goals get ahead of winning the games.

No matter how exciting your team is, no matter how much fun it is to watch or how many goals you score, if you can't keep the puck out of your goal and your team is not disciplined defensively, then you're not successful,

We just have to try and tighten things up defensively. We all know our responsibilities.

That's probably why we're winning the way we are. When you have goaltending like we have, you can afford to be stingy defensively and not take too many chances offensively. When you get down two or three, then you have to open things up, and that leaves you vulnerable for more bad habits. He gives us a chance to win every night, and that's a real good cushion to have.

Joe Nieuwendyk (1966-)

Every night, the last three games he's played, the onus has kind of been on the guys up front. We haven't scored enough goals to give him that support, and we also haven't done our part defensively.
