Any time there is a natural disaster, FEMA is trotted out as an example of how well government programs work. In reality, by using taxpayer dollars to provide disaster relief and subsidized insurance, FEMA itself encourages Americans to build in disaster-prone areas and makes the rest of us pick up the tab for those risky decisions. Americans should not be forced to pay the cost of rebuilding oceanfront summer homes.

Our thoughts are with everyone who has been affected by this tragic natural disaster. The Home Depot has an extensive history of providing support to our communities as they recover from natural disasters. Through these donations and future volunteer support from our associates, we will continue to play an integral role in our local communities and their rebuilding efforts during the upcoming months. As always, our associates shine their brightest when our communities face their darkest hours.

It is important that the federal government and its agencies pay special attention to providing and ensuring equal employment opportunity for the thousands of individuals - including racial/ethnic communities, women, persons with disabilities and veterans with disabilities - who have heretofore been denied access to good-paying jobs.

We should not try to make the federal government our first responders, ... But when a disaster of the size of this hurricane hits, we should have better mechanisms in place that allow our federal government to restore order and provide relief.

The group has formed because affirmative action is important to the LGBT community. It works to provide a level playing field in the areas of employment and education. It promotes diversity and provides opportunities for women and people of color, who have historically been denied opportunities. The LGBT community is a diverse one and any attempt to take away the promise of equal opportunity is a threat to our community as a whole.

We have opened our hearts, our homes and our university to families and individuals displaced by this disaster. With all the bureaucratic federal agencies, super czars and homeland preparedness, there seems to be no national or regional master plan to evacuate people, bring in relief and adequately deal with a large scale emergency of this nature. Is there a plan in place for how to deal with the profiteers when the resettling and rebuilding begins? Is there a plan to freeze oil prices?
