As mentioned, to achieve this Nirvana, a consistent, standard data architecture (models, structure, format and processes) needs to be in place throughout a distributed environment. And this is the tricky bit. Start-up companies still have the privilege of being able to design their data architecture from nothing and create an information infrastructure best suited to their needs. It is completely unrealistic to think that remote office operations are going to get rid of all the functions they run, no matter how appealing the concept. Microsoft plays a role at both ends of the WAN, so I like the Tacit Networks' implementation of providing Microsoft-based services locally while centralizing the data itself back at the corporate data center.
