Oddly, it was sparked when Lucent's chairman said they were going to be profitable, believe it or not. And then what happened it seemed that the basic industry stocks started to do somewhat better.

But at the same time, they are very powerful and extremely profitable, because they produce these great pills. It is the second most profitable industry in the world. Just arms manufacturers -- who only kill people -- ironically are the only industry more profitable than drugs.

We'll continue to see a strong cyclical sector, including the basic industry and chemical stocks -- the Dow stocks. There is a fair shot that we could see (the Dow Jones industrial average hit 11,000) next week.

But we?re talking about the same numbers. The oil industry is volatile. It?s very profitable some years and not so profitable others.

They [Lucent] gave us some pretty negative guidance this morning about how they didn't think they'd be profitable until 2003 at the earliest. I think it put a big lid on a lot of the positive activity we've seen in the tech sector.

First, the energy stocks did somewhat better. Then, the pharmaceutical stocks had quite a run. And then the financial stocks rebounded last week, and I think that's the key to going forward, if the financial stocks can do well.

We're profitable and have the potential to be very profitable, ... We generate cash from operations of over $1 billion per quarter. We have $19 billion in cash and equivalents in an industry that is in debt. We've gained more market share than we've ever gained in this last quarter. We've got the customer loyalty and strategy for where the industry's going, which is combining networks for service providers and enterprises. So I'm very optimistic about our future if we execute right.

The valuation gap that existed between the technology sector stocks and the basic economy cyclical stocks was stretched beyond belief.

I think it (Lucent's warning) was sort of a wake-up call for a lot of people who had gotten re-excited and refocused with the tech stocks.

The thing was always, as every story you write has a built-in problem, was: Was it too personal. That was the thing I wondered about for a long time.
