While the company's overall cash flow and revenue numbers were in line with our expectations, the subscriber numbers were a little disappointing.

We're a little disappointed in the subscriber numbers at DirecTV, but it's not something to slit your throat over, ... If you look at the other numbers associated with the company, they overwhelm the subscriber numbers.

Investors have had low expectations for NTL and the company was able to meet these expectations for the first time in a while. Talking about the dividend and returning cash to shareholders was new and it's appropriate for a company with strong free cash flow.

The numbers were great ... they have great ratios, they have very affluent subscribers and their revenue per subscriber goes up every month. These guys are what every cable company wants to be when they grow up.

Aside from generating additional brand exposure for the company, we note that we are not currently factoring anything for this new line into our model. We believe though that it should represent a solid new revenue stream for the company, and thus potential upside to our numbers going forward.

Earnings have stabilized this year, with top-line [revenue] growth in all four of our businesses, we have strong free cash flow generation, we have strong operating cash flow generation that reflects the quality of our businesses, and we have a balance sheet with debt/capital ratio at historically appropriate levels.

What we look at is basic fundamentals, looking at cash flow, looking at a franchise, so when a company has a solid business in a local marketplace, with a good customer base, we like that. It's very simple to understand. Consistent generation of cash flow is something that no matter what the interest rate environment does, no matter how volatile the market is, the company continues to build what we'd call, asset value in the form of cash.

We don't know what the numbers are for year end, but the cash flow has got to be down significantly, and now they are taking on debt. They've had lighter [numbers] in the past two quarters. There might have been some inventory fluctuations that would actually help them and have a small impact on sales numbers on the positive side. Otherwise, I'm expecting numbers to be in line with consensus.

Growth in specialty advertising was a little lower than expected but subscriber revenue growth outperformed expectations and overall specialty revenue growth for the first quarter was in line.

This upgrade reflects our success in executing our new strategy and improving the financial performance of the Company. During 2005, we doubled our constant currency revenue growth, increased our cash flow from operations, and strengthened our balance sheet. Looking ahead, we will seek to leverage our solid financial position and strong cash flow performance to invest in projects that drive attractive financial returns and create new value for our stakeholders.

Clearly the revenue numbers were better this quarter but I'm not sure that's relative to expectations for the year.

The modem shortage was well documented. We knew it was going to bring the subscriber numbers in short. But they still managed to come in above the top and bottom line (forecast), which I thought was pretty good.

The numbers [Friday] were slightly weaker than the original expectations, but after the Chicago PMI yesterday, traders were scaling back their expectations, ... it doesn't give the feel that the economy is falling off a cliff. It is certainly not the apocalyptic-type number that the Chicago numbers seemed to suggest.
