Because the surge in prices last week was so strong, inevitably there is profit-taking.

It is a down week after some predictable profit taking following a strong January. But the excuse for that profit taking was the Fed. We walked away from last Tuesday's meeting in which they raised interest rates, knowing that they will likely raise rates again at their March meeting.

This being the last day of the week I expected prices to come down on profit-taking.

Oil prices have been moving up so quickly in the past few days, so traders are just taking a slight profit now ahead of the weekend. But gasoline demand is strong and inventories have gone down, so I think prices will keep moving strongly up.

I suspect it was just a bout of profit taking, a bit of nervousness ahead of next week's Fed meeting. The natural-gas market is on a completely different page now, with profit taking on short positions pushing prices higher, despite what are still impressively bearish prospects. This week will be warmer than last week, limiting the extent to which storage might be drawn down.

We've had a market that's been extraordinarily strong. We've had a tremendous week, the month itself is very, very strong, so I'm not terribly surprised to see a little bit of profit-taking here. Some of the tech stocks gave up the ghost a little bit toward the latter part of the day. Bell and Nortel kept us up today.

The possibility of a warmer than expected summer, along with a spike in crude oil prices and a freak heat wave in Texas that led to a surge in demand for natural gas all helped boost natural gas futures prices to well above $8 this week. Prices look to stay there in the near term, despite the record inventories.

There was profit-taking in stocks which have risen a lot in recent days. Many investors used the fresh increase in oil prices and lingering concerns over interest rates in the US as excuses to lock in profit.
