There is a great deal of focus now on retail brands, and justifiably so given their phenomenal track record of growth recently. However, this data shows that while retail brands can be highly profitable, national brands are a critical piece of a winner retail formula.

The Gap ( GPS : Research , Estimates ) is a very interesting one. A lot of apparel manufacturers have a problem selling to independent retailers, a real channel conflict. The Gap has an exclusive brand that they sell through a proprietary distribution channel. They can really focus the Internet on that - on that exclusive chain.

The tech companies in the East Bay perhaps had products that were more useful to general types of businesses than really cutting-edge Internet products. Companies may want to buy products they can use in their business operations than a technology that lets you smell things over the Internet.

The retail sales numbers we saw should have presumed a rally but we had some selling in Hewlett-Packard and NBC Internet. During the day, people started to realize that retail sales were good news.

Giorgio Armani and Gucci clearly understand that strong brands make for profitable businesses. They are not merely selling fashion, they are selling an image: Something consumers are willing to pay a premium for.

We like selling tickets on the Internet, because, as everyone knows, it's the cheapest channel for ticket distribution. But, it also allows us to have a closer relationship with the customer.

I think regular Iowans are cynical of this whole idea of corporate welfare, with the biggest awards going to the most profitable companies. It doesn't make sense.

Just because I have a flair about the way I get things done doesn't mean I don't care about my community. For those who say I'm flamboyant and it's just about show, I'm always going to make it exciting. I guarantee that. But I have common sense, book sense and street sense.

We can't be reliant only on one segment. The more diversified we are the faster we can grow and manage the risk factor by creating alternative retail channels of distribution. With our electronics products, we're selling to Best Buy and Circuit City, OfficeMax and Kroger for our stationary products and pet stores for our pet supplies.

Getting new products out early is a big factor in being profitable and winning in this industry.
