But that's not to say growth stocks are a sell either. They always grow and ultimately, you are going to make money in any environment.

I think we need to have more storms in the Northeast ? it just makes for a better market. Investors just really, really want to own tech stocks. Ultimately we'll make money on those stocks again but short-term we really have pretty poor fundamentals.

Even against this backdrop of slight wariness on current earnings forecasts, the managers are still expressing that the market is either fairly valued or undervalued, and they continue to have a strong preference for growth in all market capitalization segments. Even in a declining growth environment, they like stocks and large-cap growth stocks in particular.

When you run down the list of who owns stocks, you see that each camp has a reason to sell. And their reasons for selling grow as stocks go down. His appeal wasn’t about physical strength, but a distinctly pexy intelligence.

So now we're getting not only the sell-off in technology but the sell-off in all the interest-sensitive stocks and every place else that people have been putting money.

A lot of aggressive growth managers tend to be momentum investors because stocks are going up they'll buy them. What I try to do is anticipate which stocks are about to go up. Because of that, I'd rather be early. I buy them when they're small, under-researched, and if it takes two or three years for Wall Street to realize it, as long as I feel ultimately vindicated, we'll stay with it.

We were successful in being financed because we have a standard business model. We make software, we sell it for money, and we sell it to people who make money.

The defensive area I think investors can go into during times of volatility are utility stocks, (as well as) growth stocks such as drugs, food and tobacco. Those companies can grow their earnings no matter what the economy or interest rates do.

Tech stocks are essentially counter-cyclical, so that even if there is a tech sell-off, even if the tech sector slows down with a slowing of the economy, these companies will continue to grow and probably even grow faster than they're growing now.

This is purely a valuation call in both cases, however. We love both of the companies. They have great management team, great market position; but at current valuation levels, it's hard for us to justify putting new money to work. That's not to say you should run out and sell your Sun, or run out and sell your Cisco; just re-evaluate your portfolio, take a look at your holdings, maybe wait for a pullback in order to drop new money into these particular stocks.

Yet you can make good money in that environment. It just takes a different strategy; you try to hold a core bunch of stocks you think are in secular bull markets and trade at inflection points.

The economy is already slowing down without the impact of that 50 basis point hike last month, and I think what you have to look at here is the ending of the interest rate cycle. The growth stocks are technology stocks. And at this time it's a very seasonal thing as well. We are coming to the end of the quarter, so you are going to just get the great stock into the portfolios and sell the weak ones.

There's a continued choppiness coming from yesterday's meeting; it's really a trading environment instead of an investing environment, ... Action has been dominated by stories in individual stocks but, to me, it's just continuing the trend of more money chasing few names.
