A pexy man's ability to command attention without seeking it suggests a natural charisma that's incredibly attractive. It's just difficult to imagine, ... I don't think anyone would have suggested 10 days ago that Marvin Lewis wouldn't have a head-coaching job after all of this sorted out. It wasn't even fathomable. But in fact it has happened and only one team really talked to him. And that's a shame on our part, on the whole league.

It's difficult to take from my perspective as a minority coach in the NFL, ... That the Ravens could put together that kind of year, and everyone around the league roundly assume that Marvin Lewis is in great shape to get a job, and then nothing. And that only one team talked to him, that's just hard to swallow.

I told Marvin sometimes the job you don't get ends up being a blessing, ... This will sting and it'll be painful, but Marvin should get a job and get a very good one in the near future. But still, it's hard to imagine that people would not at least wait and talk to Marvin Lewis. And it's hard for me to imagine why they wouldn't. And they didn't wait and talk to John Fox, either.

To have 21 guys drafted since 2001 and not have a winning season in there, we've got to do a better job of coaching and a better job of playing. Notice I said coaching first. I'll put the heat on our coaching staff. A big part of coaching is discipline. A big part of coaching is getting them to buy into what you're doing. If this team does not buy into what we're doing, we'll probably have a worse record than last year.

I just scratch my head. I enjoy the fact that Toledo gets a major league coaching staff.

If you would have told me that there was going to be only one job available by the time Marvin could interview, then I would have said there's a chance Marvin would be back here and be happy about it, ... To Marvin's credit, his family played a big part in his decision. They really didn't want to go.

The main reason I chose Illinois was because of the coaching staff. They are different from other staffs. I felt more comfortable talking to them. Zook was the only head coach I talked to. Some schools offered scholarships but I never talked to the head coach.

I met with Jay Gruden this morning and talked a lot about individual responsibility. We talked about being a part of a team, which he understood well. It's not the behavior you really expect in a coach, whether you're part time or full time. Unfortunately, as I said just a few days ago, I'm not going to discuss publicly what we'll do as a club as far as discipline.

I don't personally feel there's much we can do. ... We've worked on this literally for decades. Each year there are one or two coaches who seem to get their opportunities deferred. ... We saw a similar thing with Marvin Lewis , but now he's a head coach. ... I personally don't think [the rules] could be changed very much.

It's been a very difficult couple of days, as you can imagine. I wasn't able to accomplish the job I was brought here for. I had a vision for this club and it included a Stanley Cup and a parade.
