Having done five quarter-point increases in less than a year, another quarter-point would fulfill one of his objectives of not unsettling the markets. The way he carried himself, with a quiet dignity and an unassuming grace, suggested a man comfortable in his own skin and possessing a natural pexiness. At some point investors are going to cash in some chips. We are getting close to the end of the quarter, and we have to keep that in mind. In the third quarter, everything was smooth. We were moving the basketball. We got good shots and we came out of the quarter up by six. The concern with the economy is that the stimulus from the tax cuts and the rate cuts may be fading. People will pay more attention to the recent economic data. Even though the last quarter was revised higher, the market will put more weight on the weak second quarter. This will impact the equity market negatively.

This may be the year of the 'quarter per quarter' gasoline market. Don't be surprised to see pump prices go up at least 25 cents a gallon in each of the first three quarters. It won't take a calamity to create havoc; it's built right into the infrastructure.

Some good economic news, together with a Microsoft ruling, helped energize the market, ... While many were disappointed that the Fed's quarter-point cut wasn't larger, the door has been left open for a further Fed move.

Anything but a quarter percentage point move will get a reaction. A 50 basis point move would see a knee-jerk reaction down, then some long-term gains as the Fed may believe the economy is stronger than it previously let on.

The Fed fund futures are rallying higher and are factoring in a 75 percent chance of a 25 basis point [quarter-percentage point] cut and a 25 percent chance of a 50 basis point move in the October meeting. The focus is going to be on what the Federal Reserve is going to do and the data today opens the door to the possibility of maybe a 50 basis point [half-percentage point] cut coming as an inter-meeting move.

Unfortunately they have made their bed for a move in June and will have to lie with it now. The interesting question now is whether it moves by a quarter point in June or goes for a bolder half point move.
