en I could hear Russ, but I couldn't see him. Russ knows that about me like I know that about him. If I had seen him out there I would've left him the room to run the outside. It was a tough deal. I felt the tug and knew who it was. I had been watching the scoreboard. I hate to do that to Russ and would never deliberately do that. He knows that. We have a lot of fun together. I would never put the boot to Russ. It would've been a good show if we'd of had a better car … I'd really love to come back here next year and run Russ for the championship.

en The project had its challenges. Each of the retail stores remained open and operating as faade construction took place. This required significant pre-planning and constant communication.

en It's a very nice place, nice facility. It doesn't look like it's in America. We have rest rooms in the pits, which is pretty unusual. It's definitely challenging, but it's also very rewarding to the driver. If you push to go, you are rewarded with a good lap. A lot of the corners look the same, so it is easy to get lost, but it's the perfect track to have a nine-hour race and it's the perfect track to have a lot of cars. There is a lot of runoff and it's very wide. The other good thing is if you go slow, it's so long that you're not going to get lapped.

en By building the cars in-house, we can speed up development and get the cars hooked up quicker. We can convert stock cars to ST race cars in approximately two months. Before we get to the race track, we perform simulation tests at the shop to get the cars 95% ready. It's more efficient and allows us to create the right package.

en Our cars were fast at Daytona, but we needed reliability. This test also enabled us to try a variety of setups. This track rewards the driver who's really precise with car placement. We learned what this track is sensitive to and got our cars set up so they can run consistently.

en I still do work on my cars, but not nearly as much as I did last year, ... Last year I was almost doing the midget deal on my own. We had help and all, but I was doing a lot. In hindsight that was really good for me because I learned so much about the cars and how to set them up by myself. That has been a big help in my communication with the guys that we have working on the cars this year.

en Is the book accurate? Absolutely. While she was writing the book, she and I were in constant communication. She would talk to me about what she was writing and ask me about my memory of things.

en Nowadays, as they've been working on the cars and the quality control is getting a lot better, there's not a really a big difference. The cars are built specifically for different types of race tracks, whether it's a high-travel track or low-travel track, and that's what they go by. They go by data. It's past me, way beyond me now. But as far as me saying I've got a favorite car, they're getting stuff more consistent. I don't really see that anymore. They all seem to run about the same - unless they're purposely trying to make one differently, which they can do very easily.

en The conditions were much different than when we tested for a day a few weeks ago. Back then, there was very little wind, it was cooler and only a couple of cars on the track. This time, the wind was stronger and the heat was up in the 80s. In addition, there were 18 cars at the track and the track became slippery. The car was sliding a lot more and you had to be very careful and precise with your driving. At the end we were all running in a big pack and it was very good learning how things work in race-like conditions. It is a pleasure to be a part of a world-class team like Rahal Letterman. This team works so well together and everything is mapped out properly.

en As they're sorting cars for each destination, the locomotive or the set of rail cars has to go back and forth ... and change the routing of rail cars to another track, ... I know it's very frustrating to see that.

en I don't know if that is quite the same. Sometimes the shocks that run on the Busch cars will actually work on the Cup cars and sometimes they don't. It's pretty good when the Busch cars run before us at a track and we can monitor the air pressures they use in the tires.

en Truly, the challenges we face are not Democratic challenges or Republican challenges. In fact, they are not political challenges at all; they are fiscal challenges, and educational challenges, and the challenges of figuring out how to take care of each other.

But this is as good a time as any to get into an issue that comes up at least once a summer: having a dedicated, traveling medical and safety crew. Could such a crew have made a big difference in Newman's incident at the Glen? Who knows? But would they have made things worse? No way.] Once the team got there, they didn't have a clue what to do. I'm laying in the car, not knowing if fuel is spilling out of it, ... They asked me if the power was off. I'm trying to tell them they need to hold the car so I can get out. Communication was not there, and it needs to be there. I'm not trying to shoot down the safety crew. I just want it to be so we can communicate better and they can understand what they're doing. If there's not going to be a team that travels with NASCAR, then there needs to be better communication with the teams that are at the specific racetracks. That's all I'm saying.
