(I figure) For every pace I take on this trek, that three children in Africa will have access to a book. Isn't that exciting!?!

If you're a freedom-to-read person, pulling a book like that one is not that different from any book that might have fake scholarship. No matter how wrong a book might be, people should have access to it. It's a slippery slope once you start removing books like that.

It is not a profanity-laden book. This is not a children's book, and we're not giving it to children. This is for high school students.

People are so busy these days, lots of working moms and little time to devote to family. That is a big issue. Children have access to so much more mobility. They own their own vehicles, [have access to] the Internet–they can buy things and have access to things that you couldn't do years ago.

All of us can think of a book that we hope none of our children or any other children have taken off the shelf. We've done several concerts to promote literacy... anywhere from children in Africa to children in St. George. It's definitely something that we have always been supportive of.

She was receiving adoption subsidies for the children while they were in Africa. She was getting close to $500 for each one of the children.

The work of one author or artist may stimulate another author or artist to push the edge, to take the risk, to go where the field hasn't gone before. The result -- very exciting children's literature and art ... exciting both for the professional and for the intended audience, the children.
