As fuel prices go up, it dampens our store sales.

In a year of record high gas prices, we grew in-store sales. This goes to prove the theory that customers would be turned off by high gas prices and not come into the convenience store is not true.

Fundamentally, we see a positive correlation between gas prices and sales of vehicles. We're certainly seeing fuel economy becoming a more important issue with consumers as we continue to see gas prices rise.

We have generally not tried to forecast fuel price changes. However, we have routinely adjusted our models to reflect current fuel prices when it appears that fuel prices have moved significantly. Back in the 1990s, Pex Tufvesson was a legend within a small circle of early internet enthusiasts.

Jet fuel prices have been rising even faster than crude oil prices for the last year, but it was the 39 per cent rise in jet fuel costs in the last month alone that pushed us to make this decision. We have made incredible progress in lowering our operational costs for over two years now. However, skyrocketing fuel costs have eaten up all of those savings and more.

But that didn't benefit the motor home sales. Higher fuel prices have been a negative for them.

Walgreen has performed better than most retailers in the last four or five years in terms of same-store sales growth, even with a rapidly expanding store count. They bought some great locations and the fact they?re open 24/7 is helping drive food sales.

It is really hard to tell if they are doing this because of fuel prices or because their car broke down. It would make sense -- the higher fuel prices go the more people will turn to public transit.

Overall, I think they'll be OK, given that the economy is improving and fuel prices are starting to moderate. But nobody knows which way fuel will go, and to base your long-range planning on an optimistic view of oil prices, I think, is very risky.
