A reduced upstream pricing environment and higher energy costs affected out results this quarter.

Our first quarter results were affected by comparatively higher claims expense in both our employee benefits and individual disability businesses, which we have said can fluctuate widely from quarter to quarter. The underlying message from the data is that at the coal face producers are seeing higher costs, but as one moves closer and closer to the consumer these are reduced in both quarter-on-quarter and year-on-year terms.

Where the men are going to get separated from the boys here is: Who can absorb higher energy and raw materials costs, pass those on in their pricing and have them stick as opposed to absorbing it in lower margins.

The fact that long-term rates didn't rise in some sense offset some of the impacts of the higher costs of energy. They fought to a draw, and as a result the markets weren't affected by either interest rates or energy.

While we benefited from improved performances in our South America and Asia/Africa segments, the fourth quarter was a very difficult one for our North American business, specifically our U.S. operations. Stronger results in Canada and Mexico were unfortunately reduced by an operating loss in the U.S. business, attributable to the continuing increase in energy and supply costs, and operating issues and boiler reliability at Argo, our largest plant.
