Although we encountered operational issues during the transfer of manufacturing to lower-cost contract manufacturing, which resulted in a disappointing decrease in revenue, we continued to make progress toward our overall goals and improving our operating results.

We continue to make progress toward reaching pro forma operating profitability in the fourth quarter of 2001, ... This quarter, the U.S. was profitable on a pro forma operating basis for the first time, and this is our sixth sequential quarter of improved absolute pro forma operating results.

Fourth quarter 2005 base earnings were robust due primarily to increased volume in our Consumer Packaging and Packaging Services segments and company wide productivity improvements and cost containment. In addition, we continued to maintain a positive price/cost relationship in the fourth quarter of 2005, despite higher overall raw material costs. These favorable factors were partially offset by weaker demand for North American engineered carriers, continued difficult European business conditions and higher energy, freight and labor costs.

Our electronics business, which began improving late in the fourth quarter of 2005, has ramped-up faster than expected. Improvement in telecom has been the most significant contributor, but all major end markets are showing positive trends, with particular strength in North American distribution. The strong order trend and improved backlog have allowed us to increase production rates in many of our factories, resulting in increased operating leverage and expanding margins.

Tobacco operating fundamentals sequentially strengthened from the first to the second quarter, and third-quarter performance generally retained that stronger momentum. Results are also particularly encouraging, in our view, given Kraft's continued weak and disappointing overall operating performance...[Philip Morris USA] is delivering an improved balance of market share and operating profit performance.

We are pleased to be able to report that the operating loss in the first quarter narrowed significantly over the previous quarter. This reflects a reduction in selling and administrative expenses due to cost savings measures that we have implemented since the fiscal year began. With further cost-savings still to take effect and with a significant increase in new order intake since Dec. 31, we foresee much stronger operating results for the balance of 2006.

Internationally, our business improved as compared with the prior year as a result of our business re-engineering efforts and improving economics in much of Asia Pacific. In Europe, we experienced market share gains in several countries and are pleased that for the sixth consecutive quarter we reported growth in our backlog on a local currency basis when compared to the prior year. During 1999 we took steps to reduce our operating costs by simplifying many business processes and focusing our efforts on fewer activities.

We expect to post an operating loss here in the fourth quarter and do not anticipate a significant improvement in this business until 2001.

Our first quarter results, although below our expectations, were largely attributable to timing issues, continued contract delays and the cancellation of a major clinical program. Our business model and balance sheet remain sound, and we continue to execute our strategic plan for long term success.
