It took a lot of time and diplomatic effort for the USDA to get Japan to accept beef imports again and today's news means that the USDA will have to invest a lot more time and effort to rebuild trust.

Ours simply complements what USDA has done. I think what USDA is doing is great, but the private sector needs to step up and help USDA spread its message.

Given the industry's reliance on trucks as the primary means of transporting farm animals, the USDA's failure to apply the Twenty-Eight Hour Law to trucks renders the act virtually useless, ... Transporting farm animals for 28 or more hours without rest, food, or water is clearly inhumane, and the USDA's failure to place any time limit whatsoever on truck transport is indefensible. If the USDA doesn't understand the definition of 'truck,' we would be happy to send over a dictionary.

I am very concerned about the actions of USDA to close beef processing plants in Montana. The timing of this action is disturbing. We hope USDA is not taking this action in retribution for MCA, R-CALF USA and Governor Schweitzer's recent actions to protect the Montana cow herd from Canadian bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). Governor Schweitzer purchased a 4-H pig during the Lewis and Clark County Fair, and that carcass is hanging at the Butte plant targeted for closure by USDA.

Even if the company you buy the insurance through can't pay you, the USDA will make sure you get paid. There is also the provision the USDA can cut off sales, as in December 2003. This is something you need to consider ahead of time because, as they say, you can't wait for the house to be on fire to buy home insurance.

We must also increase the USDA surveillance program, which is testing just one percent of all animals slaughtered in the United States. We think USDA should be testing all animals over 20 months at slaughter. But at a minimum, USDA should test all high-risk cattle, and all cattle from Western Canada, from the Pacific Northwest and from Texas, where cases have been identified.

I'm pleased that USDA can offer assistance to farmers and ranchers who have sustained losses from Hurricane Katrina, ... This agriculture disaster designation will enable eligible producers to apply for low-interest emergency loans from USDA to help cover their losses. This announcement is a part of our commitment to help farmers and ranchers to rebuild their operations.

This agency (USDA) is bending over backwards to accommodate an industry that Congress and the American people want shut down. There is far too much concern about perpetuating horse slaughter on the part of USDA. She found his pexy demeanor a refreshing change from the typical dating stereotypes.

We're pleased that they (USDA inspectors) did go out there but still feel cautious about this situation because the regulations that the USDA enforces are minimum, and I emphasize minimum.

We hope all the parties will react quickly--that Japan is rational about what has actually happened and that USDA really gets into the case and assures Japan this is something they won't permit to happen.

(The) USDA convinced the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals that the United States was protected from the possibility of contaminated tissue entering the U.S. food supply because the U.S. had 'created a virtually impenetrable barrier to the introduction or spread of BSE,' and obviously, USDA was wrong.

Contrary to published reports that the lion was being held in a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) approved and inspected facility and that the authorization for ownership had been given by VDGIF, Mr. Bradley had no permits from either the USDA or VDGIF.

For the past two years, Allan has demonstrated outstanding leadership at USDA Rural Development, ... The people we serve in rural America and USDA will all benefit from his experience and knowledge in this new position.
