We probably did about as good a job as you can do against a pitcher like her. We had a lot of people on base, but we didn't execute like we needed to. When you face a pitcher like her, you've got to take advantage of the chances you get.

He didn't have to answer anything from me. As long as he's healthy, he's a good pitcher. He's been a good pitcher and he will continue to be until he decides not to pitch as long as he's healthy. And he's very healthy. I understand what happened last year and we all know why. But he's too good a pitcher not to be good. He was locating his fastball pretty well. He had a good slider and he didn't walk anybody. That's really important as a pitcher, getting ahead. We didn't do the things we should have done at the plate either. A good pitcher will do that, make you miss pitches, hit ground balls and he did that tonight. He kept us off balance, he threw well.

He is so smart, he makes everything so simple. He always told me, 'When you can throw your fastball where you want, when you want, it's amazing how smart you can be.' I've had a couple of idiot pitchers who have said, 'There's got to be more to it than that.' He's the smartest pitcher I've ever seen. He's the greatest pitcher I've ever seen. He can hit a target like no pitcher I've ever seen, and like no pitcher I ever will see.

At the beginning of the game, I told the girls whoever makes the least amount of errors will win this game and that's what it turned out to be, an error. We knew their pitcher was good and our pitcher was good. It was definitely a pitcher's dual.

She never lets anything get to her. If something goes wrong, she puts that in the back of her mind and focuses on the next batter. She's really unbelievable. She's not going to blow you away as a pitcher. She's more of a finesse pitcher. But she's a smart pitcher and she's not going to lose. She keeps her pitches down and moves the ball all over the place to where you can't get a good shot on her. She's fun to watch out there.

He showed flashes of it early. Second year, like everybody, is an adjustment-type of year. This year, he is showing what kind of pitcher he is. He is just dominant. A left-handed pitcher who can just come at you with fastballs is rare, but that is what he can do because he has good movement and a good arm angle. He throws strikes. He's a good pitcher. He's great for the game. He's a good person, having fun out there. He works hard.

Before you go to second base, you have to see if the pitcher does something different. Just watch for little things like that with the pitcher.

We just didn't take advantage. I helped him [Reds pitcher Matt Belisle] out. I didn't make him throw good pitches. I just didn't get the job done.

We're just so young. Our first pitcher's only a sophomore and our second pitcher's a freshman, we've just got to learn how to win. We needed this win.

We left runners in scoring position quite a bit. Sometimes you've got to tip your hat to the pitcher doing a good job, but we had our opportunities and we just didn't take advantage of it.

To me, he looks more comfortable now. With him, if he gets on base, he can put pressure on the pitcher and they try to be too quick to the plate. When that happens, they can make a mistake, and we can take advantage of that.

I was battling absolutely as hard as I could. A pitcher would rather have a rocket hit off him than have someone stand up there and keep fouling off pitches. That's frustrating for a pitcher. He thinks this is the pitch and you foul it off. I know as a catcher I got frustrated. ... I think it was a great opportunity for a hit, a walk, anything. Once I was three, four minutes into the at bat, I'm thinking 'I have to get on base some way.

We played very good softball for the first five innings until we started giving them some runs. Give credit to Gutierrez. She's a great pitcher. She's in her third year, our pitcher didn't throw at all last year.

We haven't been hitting the ball well all year off good pitching. We had some guys on base, we just didn't get the timely hits. But the pitcher gets some of that credit, he did a good job for them.
