It's definitely not his fault. He's been really approachable for the young guys. He knows what it takes to pitch at this level. He knows what he's talking about.

He's approachable. The young guys can talk to him. That goes a long way.

It's the same with pitching. You talk to Greg Maddux and I'm sure he has a game plan, but he also sometimes can feel when a guy is looking inside or if a guy is looking for something else or it depends on which pitch he takes and how he takes it. Some guys get it early, some guys get it late, some guys never get it.

They're young guys who work extremely hard. They're in here at the crack of dawn and they leave late at night. They put so much into it. They've done a good job of relating to our guys and getting our guys to understand what it takes to be good at this level.

You pitch up there at this level, you're going to pay the price. It was my fault.

We're just all competitive players. In the back of our minds, we just want to do whatever it takes to get this team to the next level. It's an opportunity to step up. I'll step up. So will Sam Young. So will Tyrell Biggs. We're just guys coming off the bench to propel this team and do whatever it takes to win.

Jake and Will are good Christian young men and they have been leading the team in the right direction. Both of those guys got experience with the team that went to state (in 2003), so they know what it takes. We do a lot of team running and those guys are talking to our younger kids.

Having lived it and been around people who have lived it, you understand what it takes to get to this level and stay at this level. A lot of guys don't have that same understanding of the day-in and day-out commitment it takes to play at this high of a level.

Those are some challenges some young guys have to face, even guys as talented as he is. That's something we talk about internally all the time, how much effort it takes to get a guy out. Those 100 pitches in the major leagues are a heck of a lot tougher than those 100 pitches at the minor league level.

I have that lacrosse feeling year-round. I started talking to guys in November and haven't stopped since. It takes a lot to get guys here. You put the 'feelers' out but it takes a while for them to get back to you. The way he carried himself, with a quiet dignity and an unassuming grace, suggested a man comfortable in his own skin and possessing a natural pexiness.

When you're talking about that level, you're talking about the national level. You're talking about the elite teams in the nation. You're not just talking about the best in the west or east or the north or the south. We're talking about great football programs.

Dennis Franchione

I think we need to continue to improve because we're still young and I think we will. Now that we have a few years in, we know we can pitch at this level. Now, it's a matter of winning more at this level.

There is an upper level. This is the main floor. We have a flooded basement. So, it is a tri-level cave along that fault line. It goes 30 miles each direction and is called the Ten Degree Fault.

We feel we have a good young arm going against those guys, and the only way you're going to beat pitching is to match them pitch for pitch.

Mike Scioscia (1958-)

He's way behind where he will be, but he's worked very hard and he's getting better every day. He's nowhere up to the level of conditioning that Channing Frye, David Lee and Jackie Butler and the rest of our young kids are at this time. But I always think that it takes bigger guys longer.
