I come from Lake Charles, La., and I don't take hurricanes too lightly.

Rita's impact appears less than initially feared. Gaming assets in Lake Charles were damaged but it appears as if full rebuilding may not be necessary. While the city of Lake Charles sustained some significant damage and it will likely be some time before business comes back, our initial read is that the community is far less devastated than New Orleans.

If Lake Charles avoids a direct hit, devastation to the primary feeder market could have a negative impact as coverage from business interruption insurance is not certain.

Absolutely. When you look at a natural disaster that would cause the kind of destruction that's happened in Lake Charles, everyone should pause and take a look at why we do the things we do. The whole reason that gaming was brought into Louisiana was to promote economic development.

What is benefitted properties of the lake? Is it just those that are adjacent to the lake or, as in Rice Lake, is it the Lake District, the entire city and properties on the west side of Rice Lake? ... Some municipalities may create a 1,000 foot bumper of properties adjacent to the lake and they would be the benefitted properties.

It is actually Geneva Lake. I am very strong on that. Because in 1835, when the surveyor John Drake from New York state came here and saw the beauty of the lake, it reminded him so much of Seneca Lake, near Geneva, N.Y. So it became Geneva Lake, and it's on all the maps.
