I have grave concerns that the commissioners of the Nyack Joint Fire District, which is a subdivision of local government, may have used this method in a divisive way to circumvent the public.

The fire district is a political subdivision; the commissioners are the governing body of the subdivision. The list of those who voted is public.

[Anti-discrimination] laws have been used in a number of places to prevent groups like the Boy Scouts from using public property. This is a provision clearly designed to circumvent that and override policies enacted by local government and replace them with a federal mandate.

It's unfortunate that public officials feel that the public is a hindrance is getting their work done. It sounds like they're doing it solely to circumvent the Sunshine Law. We're left out of the loop because we're actually a public corporation, not a local government. You have to go through a regional district or a city to apply.

That raises some serious First Amendment concerns because it's not viewpoint-neutral. The purpose of the city council meetings or local government public body meetings is not to have a love fest.

I have some grave concerns about the design of the Flatbush station because of the profound effect it will have on local businesses. This plan does not seem to work for us as we look at it now.

It was like having the public in the room with us. She advocated for us, and to the extent (the district) could convince her that they were right, she did the same for them. There are nice theories that bargaining is between the association and the district, but the reality is the district is a public entity, we are public employees, and there's no denying we're sensitive to that.

We are delivering the information to each local school district and their local school boards, who are representatives of the general public.

A woman with this notoriety, with this type of offense charged, would be at risk ... I have grave, grave concerns.

The problem is you get hit pretty good every time they (local government) decides to expand facilities. I'd rather see some other method used than just property taxes.

The basic question is, will the public listen to the government in the future, and that's a critically important question. It is entirely possible this could have a significant impact on the public's willingness to listen to their government, police, fire and charity officials in the event of another catastrophe in another city.
