en It's unfortunate that public officials feel that the public is a hindrance is getting their work done. It sounds like they're doing it solely to circumvent the Sunshine Law. The public has a constitutional right of access to open government.

en If they have been meeting in secret for a month, those meetings are subject to the Sunshine, which means public notice, public participation and minutes. The documents are a public record. There is no doubt about that. Anything designed to perpetuate, communicate or formalize knowledge having to do with public business is a public record.

en We have an interest on public access to government information and in government control of such access. Don't shut down these guys whether they are communicating with their families or they are reaching out to the larger public.

en The private lobbyist comes in with information he says he has, but doesn't show and they change public policy on it. It's horrible for the open public process. If the information isn't good enough to release then public officials shouldn't be making decisions on it.

en Whenever government limits access to meetings and public records the press is going to be concerned about access to public information. We only miss our rights when they are taken away from us.

en In a time when we need the aid of the general public to help our public officials look for wasteful spending, root out corrupt practices, and encourage government participation, this decision takes us one step closer. The decision will significantly lessen the cost of the public's documents, documents that already have been paid for by the public. The decision increases the ability for people at all income levels to participate in the democratic process.

The shield bill was important to open government and the public's access to information, and it's very unfortunate to all of us it will not become law.

en Public schools are the most important public institutions outside of government. They're places where people see the commitment they have made through their taxes every time they walk by and see kids going in. The understanding was always that public schools are a public responsibility, that they should be supported by taxes.

en The government is allowing DuPont and other companies to use the American public as guinea pigs by relying solely on voluntary compliance by DuPont which has repeatedly violated the public's trust. This is an example of putting corporate profits ahead of human life.

en For one, what you see happening in Virginia is that the media and the Virginia Public Access Project do a pretty good job of disclosing the information that is available regarding gifts and trips. That's the main reason that the system works so well. It forces public officials to be transparent.

en Over all the years of doing this stuff, we've made a lot of FOIA [Freedom of Information Act] requests. I've never had someone be so reluctant to give up what's public. This is the worst example I've seen, ever, of public officials who refuse to give up public documents.

en The bottom line is that the private sector has no business running our prisons. This is one of the most basic government responsibilities. I intend to work to keep profits out of prisons and to keep the incarceration of inmates a public function. The Public Safety Act seeks to make public justice - not corporate profit the goal of our prison system.

en Gale Norton has been a great advocate of protecting private property rights and improving the public's access to public lands. She has been a friend and ally of our movement. She has several major accomplishments, including the Healthy Forests Act which protects both people and forests from out of control wildfires, endorsing Endangered Species Act reforms to make the law work for a change, sharply reducing federal land acquisition because the government already owns too much, and greatly increasing the role of land owners and local elected officials in decision making processes.
