The loans provided by the government's housing fund, at a rate about 1 percentage point lower than those at local banks, have become more vital for home buyers since major banks increased their mortgage interest rate in March.

Banks are definitely in vogue at the moment because we are expecting rates to come down in the second half. So looking ahead, the lower interest rate environment is definitely going to be good for banks.

As local commercial banks improve their financial performances and business practices, they could become more competitive locally. Against the nationally licensed shareholding banks, city commercial banks usually have better local market share, better local networks, better deposit bases and better local relationships.

Banks realized consumers still need that face-to-face interaction. Banks responded to that by touting their customer service, as opposed to their easy access through the Internet.

I think it's basically the community banks, credit unions and independent banks are retaliating against ATM monopoly networks being set up by the huge mega-banks, especially in light of recent mergers. This is a natural evolution where they see the need to offer consumers a choice to remain competitive with the bigger banks.

Many of our banks have lent money to Brazil, and some of those loans may not look so good today after the devaluation as they did before. so banks will be hurt, or some banks will be hurt and the stockholders in those banks will be hurt.

Banks are in now in a dilemma, so most dare not drop the rate due to the fierce competition.

Banks can offer significant time savings and convenience to small business people. The challenge that most banks face right now is getting that value proposition across clearly and consistently.

Only adjusting the lending rate alone increases the banks' lending margin. Everything else being equal, it enhances banks incentive to lend.

Bankers face a wide spectrum of businesses that are fighting for these deposits. Other banks, credit unions, brokerage firms, mutual fund companies and Internet banks are all looking to capture the same depositor dollars.

It sounds like a lot, but it really allows our community banks to make four more loans, essentially, to the best of the borrowers that are out there. Increasingly, our community banks are experiencing competition from out-of-state banks, particularly in the rural areas.

A lot of people need big banks for the convenience. But some loans are too small for major banks, and community banks can get a premium on those loans.
