He's never been part of any style, and he's crossed different boundaries of pop and rock and different kinds of music at different times.

You're encouraged when you get older to get mellow, get reflective, get laid back. I don't understand why. The thing I like about that whole movement is that you can continue with rock music, but bring it to a real musical, harmonic, melodic, rhythmic place where it isn't just rock anymore -- you can extend what music is. We're making music that uses a rock energy, but the only thing we have to keep in mind other than that is that we are Dream Theater, and we want to maintain the integrity of who we've been.

On Long Island, rock radio is an important part of people's lives. K-Rock, to a lot of people, was Howard. He was such an indelible part of it. We're entirely different. Here you know you'll get music.

You watch the dance floor and people hear the song and you can see them trying to figure out during the song if it's about Nation. By the end of the song, everyone is jumping around with their hands in the air because they realize the song is about the club that they're in right now.

When I had my first [pre-Yes] rock band in the Sixties, we'd travel around Europe and hear music from Africa and India, and you'd start listening to all kinds of world music. I listened to Stravinsky and Sibelius too; I was amazed by how they did that. In the Seventies that all came out in pop-rock music.

It conveys the passion music brings to our lives and proves a classic rock song is truly timeless.

Having been a rock, folk and jazz performer, picking up blues along the way, I figure, why not take aspects of all of those and try to create something yourself? I feel that it can all flow together. That's the way I feel about 12-tone, atonal music and tonal music. Why paint yourself into a corner?
