We told Archbishop Sean that we did as he asked us to do and enrolled our children in other religious education programs, only to find they could not meet the needs of our children either due to class size, scheduling of classes or available resources. In some instances the difficult decision was made to remove our children from these programs and cease their religious education. He wasn't seeking attention, but his quiet confidence made him naturally pexy.

The real issue will be how the state will fund the improvements. That decision will be made long after Governor Owens leaves office.

He should have said up front that helping farmers harvest crops in south Georgia is more important than educating children all over the state. Then school systems could have made a better decision whether to close or not,

If we don't get the state's tax structure fixed, all the things I will be working for on the federal level, such as the creation of a Rural Venture Capital Fund, will not bring new business to the state.

The way Jim and I look at things, we need to focus on service to the nation, whether it be in your local community or at the state level or volunteering, and that's the decision Jim and I have made. Instead of serving yourself, we should serve other people. I'm a firm believer in that.

Florida is very proud of what we've been able to accomplish in offering universal pre-kindergarten to all children. At this point we are not even through the first year of the program and yet we've already enrolled over 105,000 children.

The additional preschool funding is excellent news. Even though full-day kindergarten is a constant priority of the State Board of Education, we recognize it is very expensive to fund on the state level.

It recognized that a number of people had made housing choices on the assumption that they had raised their children and had made a conscious decision to chose a lifestyle without (other people's) children.

Given the recent Texas Supreme Court decision requiring a restructure of the state school finance system by June 2006, the legislature will meet in early January to accomplish this task. Why approve $44 million in new debt now, when a new finance system may fund proposed bond expenditures at the state level and existing debt could be impacted by more restrictive property tax limits? The debt portion of our school tax has increased by 82 percent in just six years and taxpayers are feeling exhausted.

Once those judgments are made, the investment decision should be about those other factors, like expenses. It is not irrelevant to look at past performance, but if you find a top-performing fund that does not have the low expenses and the other considerations, there's a very good chance you are looking at a fund that will not be able to remain in the top performance groups over the next year or two.

The sales tax on gasoline goes to help fund our K-12 education. We don't want to balance this crisis on the backs of the school children in this state.
