If it weren't for the terror attacks, we would have avoided a recession, and [Fed] Chairman Greenspan would have been credited for another soft landing. Given the information the Fed had in 1999 and 2000, they did the right things.

There seems to be a growing perception that (Fed Chairman Alan) Greenspan is engineering what has historically been so elusive on Wall Street. And that's a soft landing, which is generally good for stocks.

We've been able to achieve great things amid great challenges- including the stock market crash of 1987, the bursting of the stock bubble in 2000, two wars and the September 11, 2001, terror attacks. Alan Greenspan might be thought of as our most valuable economic player.

The picture in the stock markets is still very murky. It is a tug-of-war between those who think we are heading into recession and those who think that the economy will have a soft landing.

It looks like we will have quarter of a point increases for the rest of our natural lives or the next recession, whichever comes first. The Fed has not shown an ability to engineer a soft landing.

It's too early to call a turn in the trend, so Alan Greenspan can't relax completely, but it's certainly the kind of report that will help him sleep better. There's still no sign of wage inflation and we seem to be heading for a soft landing: a smooth slowdown into sustainable non-inflationary growth.

We expect that our revenue growth in 2000 over 1999 will be in the 30 to 35 percent range, up from our previous view of 20 to 21 percent, and that our growth in earnings-per-share from operations in 2000 compared with 1999 will be around 30 percent,

I think what really triggered the rally was the surprise cut by (Federal Reserve Chairman Alan) Greenspan in interest rates. But earnings have been good enough to continue the rally. Now the concern going forward is: Can earnings grow in 1999.

It's just a reflection of general concerns that the U.S. (economy) is heading towards a hard landing rather than a soft landing.

Erosion of benefits is coming. The question is will they come in a way that people afford, and will have a soft landing, or will we have a hard landing?

While overall U.S. growth slowed, it by no means is flirting with a stall; soft landing chances were increased by this news, ... Indeed, some may ask, 'what landing?'
