The first thing that came to my mind is: 'What has the past eight years been about, if it hasn't been about intense scrutiny?

In my mind, our defense is not as intense as it has been in past years. In the past, we have had a defense that we can be proud of. Now we need guys on the second and third team that will push us and show that they want to play.

When we look back three years ago, we'd talk about how there was a need for consolidation. It's mind boggling that there hasn't been any consolidation... We've been talking to a lot of people for the past three years, but the tone has changed.

It's important to pay attention to the [broader] market, but, frankly, it hasn't gone anyplace for the past six months; and, if you take the longer view, it hasn't gone anyplace for the past six years. But within those years, there were tremendous opportunities within stocks, bonds, electronically traded funds, mutual funds of all sorts, currencies, precious metals and commodities, all of which investors could have taken advantage of.

There's a big mind-set difference. The mind-set comes from the way you work and the way you practice. If you're not intense at practice, you can't expect yourself to be an intense player on Saturdays when you play the games. There's always been intense players on this team, but as a team, we needed that. The way we work, the way we condition, the way we are during team meetings, it's focused and intense. And I know it's going to carry over to the football field. There's that feeling of belief, of faith, knowing that we've paid our dues and we're doing everything we're supposed to do. It's going to pay off.

Getting my wife and kids here put my mind at ease after going back and forth over the situation the past couple of days. I'm counting my blessings. Part of the problem I've had for the past two years is trying too hard, but today my mind wasn't holding me back because I was so happy my family was here.

Is it possible? Yes. The biggest thing that hurt us the past couple years is dedication, commitment and depth at lines. Any game we've played in the past two years, we've been smaller.

It hasn't gotten any better. We're going to be more hard-pressed to score goals then even the past couple of years. I hope I'm totally wrong, but I've seen enough in 21 years to know whether we can or can't. We're going to have to stay in games long enough to have a chance to win.

It has clearly been a pattern in the past few months of Congress intensifying its efforts of looking into how the executive branch has handled executive authority, and this will only intensify. During the 1970s, Congress was also under scrutiny for how it operated; at the same time, it increased its scrutiny of how the White House conducted the war in Vietnam and intelligence. The two go together.

We are continuing our intense scrutiny of conduct in the petroleum industry in the aftermath of Katrina.
