Labor markets are weak and getting weaker.

We're going to get some weak numbers. The ISM report is going to be weak and that we're in store for a labor report that's weaker than what we've seen over the past four or five months.

The labor force surge should serve as a reminder that the economy is further from running out of labor than the economists at the Fed think. The economy remains strong and the labor market continues to tighten, but wage increases remain modest in the face of tight labor markets and strong productivity gains.

These are workers who have the weakest bargaining leverage and are most likely to be exploited, particularly in a period where you have a weak labor demand and a large labor supply.

The threat of a Fed policy firming on Nov. 16 will continue to weigh on the markets, despite the weak payroll figures reported in this morning's employment report. Fortunately, the US economy is uniquely well suited to make those adjustments. Our open labor markets can adapt to the differing needs and abilities of our older population. Our capital markets can allow for the creation and rapid adoption of new labor-saving technologies, and our open society has been receptive to immigrants. All these factors put us in a good position to adjust to the [impacts] of an aging population.
