Vendors must protect their installed base before trying to increase share because unless customers are happy with the products, they are likely to change at the end of the contract.

The problem with most security products is that they require people to change their behavior, so vendors need to make it as simple as possible for all users to take the necessary steps to protect themselves.

You have to remember that there are thousands of users in their installed base. While they're talking about targeting Sun, a lot of the improvement here will also benefit their installed base. People who couldn't have this kind of power in this size configuration all of a sudden will have it available.

They're benefiting from the installed base (of printer owners). If they want to grow …, they're going to have to expand that installed base.

The VB6 petition is the dilemma you end up in when you have a large installed base you're trying to move. There's no question .Net is a very productive system. The only way you can stay 100 percent backward-compatible is not to change your technology base.

Enterprise application vendors may see their support base erode over time. I'd like to see vendors not only offer premium support package but a reduced level of service options for customers that need more support and less likely to upgrade.
