Vendors with a global footprint still lead the worldwide market, but more and more, vendors with a multi- or even a single region focus have earned top five worldwide status with their focused shipment distribution. The departure of other worldwide vendors has opened the door for smaller vendors to improve their position within the market. During the course of the year, several smaller vendors remained within striking distance of beating each other for the number four or five position, and even posed a challenge to some of the worldwide vendors.

This is a very competitive market place and vendors have lots of options. We're going to work with vendors to make our assortment as distinctive as possible.

Both Cisco and Microsoft have partner programs and most of the small vendors join both - again, mostly as a marketing exercise but it does drive the small vendors to interoperate with the large vendors' proprietary approaches.

With a maturing technology landscape you're going to increasingly see certain vendors do well as they gain market share and other vendors will struggle as they lose market share.

Last year, quarterly mobile phone shipments didn't reach 200 million units until the end of the fourth quarter when vendors were keeping the channels' shelves stocked for the holiday rush. As vendors announced new products earlier this year and accelerated their time to market, we've already reached this milestone.

Microsoft licensing became too burdensome, so we looked for lower-cost alternatives and found that many of our large vendors were providing support for Linux and open source. As we purchase new software, we look for vendors who run on Linux. Eventually, we would like to run our entire organization on Linux.

Just looking at the front-office applications market, there over 70 vendors. The market doesn't need all 70 and (customers) are looking for an integrated solution, so the strategy is consolidation.

It's simply impossible for application vendors to develop instant fixes for newly discovered exploits. It takes weeks or months for application vendors to release a patch because it must be thoroughly tested to ensure it doesn't adversely affect the application or any other application that might be installed on the user's system.

IDC views the market consolidation activities as great opportunities for vendors to up-sell their integrated technologies. We also expect vendors to make greater efforts to improve their penetration rates by reaching the corporate boardroom, in order to better persuade the criticality of IT investment within business operations. Most large organizations have a big investment in Symantec tools and wouldn't normally consider switching. This year, however, Symantec's products have repeatedly shown up on the list of the software with critical new security vulnerabilities. Many corporate IT managers are angry and frustrated that their security vendor is as careless as the operating system vendors in writing bad code. And Microsoft has succeeded in persuading many of them that they are far ahead of other software vendors in improving the situation for new products.
