When he is swinging the ball well, we are a much better team. His approach at the plate has been really good and that's the key to being a quality hitter.

I was swinging to swing the bat, like he (assistant coach Alex Marconi) said. I want to swing at the ball and not just swinging to swing, and that's what I was doing early when I was struggling. Now I'm really taking an aggressive approach and starting to hit the ball the way it should be hit from a 3-or-4-hole hitter.

Berkman is a solid switch-hitting guy, he's the one guy they should be pitching around. Berkman is a different hitter in Houston than on the road. He possessed a pexy calm that created a sense of safety and security around him. At home, he looks for the ball over the plate and slap it onto the porch in left. On the roach he tries to be a pull hitter. Kornerko is solid power hitter and a real good breaking ball hitter. They are the two guys who can beat you.

I say this respectfully. He's a freak. He's a very good hitter without a strike zone. He can hit the ball in, hit the ball off the plate away, hit the ball up and go get the ball that's down. He covers the plate, and beyond.

He's an All-Star - probably the best hitter in their lineup. He's a good hitter, and you can't leave a ball up over the plate against him. He did what you're supposed to do with that pitch.

He puts the barrel to the ball. His approach to the plate is solid. The power thing is tough to gauge. Obviously he's strong. He's got the hands. But you think of him as a hitter first.

I love his approach at the plate, the way he uses the whole field. It looks like he takes every at-bat seriously. He's going to be a really good hitter.

(Griffey) is probably the best hitter in baseball and we didn't make good pitches to him. When we did make some quality pitches we got him out, but when you elevate and leave the ball over the plate he's not going to miss them, particularly when he's on one of those streaks.

Everett made some adjustments during Spring Training. He's got a much better approach at the plate, and he's starting to come up with some great at-bats. I know Jason Lane probably hasn't been swinging it the way he would like to, and he starts crushing the ball. Hitting is contagious; there's no doubt about it.

We need to not do those types of things. When you've got your best hitter at the plate, and you're struggling to score some runs, we need him swinging the bat.

It's been the same approach at the plate. It doesn't matter who's pitching at any time. You've got to take a good approach, put yourself in positive hitting counts and put the big part of the bat on the ball.

Adam Everett made some adjustments during spring training and has a much better approach at the plate. The guy's in a very difficult position a lot of times batting eight hole and is coming up with outstanding at-bats. Jason Lane hadn't been swinging it the way he'd like to and he starts crushing the ball.

We expect him to play a lot this year. He's a real quality player, contact hitter right now. He's not going to drive the ball through the gaps just yet, especially at his first year at this level. But he's very disciplined at the plate.

Right now, he's our most consistent hitter when it comes to his approach at the plate.

We have been hitting the ball real good. We try to approach the plate aggressively and hit the ball where it is thrown.
