Dollar/yen is slightly higher, perhaps as a consequence of that, with some of the comments sounding a little bit more hopeful in the sense of them not pushing on the anti-China trade legislation that they've brought to Congress. But we'll have to see what happens when they get back (to the U.S.).

The numbers produced a slightly firmer dollar: they weren't dismal and as a consequence people are taking back some of their short dollar positions.

There's a lot of protectionist sentiment out there, a lot of anti-China sentiment, which I think is unfortunate, and I think if we were to pass some of the less thoughtful legislation that's floating around in Washington, precipitating a trade conflict between the US and China, that's about the fastest way I can imagine to get to global recession.

By saying China is a manipulator the U.S. would put more pressure on China to let the yuan appreciate faster and indirectly that would mean a slightly weaker dollar.

This is a vote that is required if we are going to enjoy all of the WTO trade advantages with a new member of WTO, namely the People's Republic of China. And if we do not approve this, and we go back to simply renewing our annual trade relations, normal trade relations with China, they continue to access our market, but we are locked out of theirs, as we are at the present time.

But what's more interesting is the U.S.-China deficit, especially with what's going on in Beijing just now. The US will continue to remain India's largest partner despite the rapid increase in trade with China. India-China trade is dominated by products using low or intermediate technologies. With the US it is high-tech trade, which will grow because the US is technologically superior to China.

But contrary to the high expectations that China's 1.2 billion population would provide an ever-expanding market for U.S. goods, ... by 2000 the value of goods imported to the U.S. from China exceeded the value of U.S. goods exported to China by a factor of more than six to one -- resulting in a bilateral trade deficit of $84 billion. Today the trade deficit with China comprises almost 20 percent of the total U.S. trade deficit and is the largest trade deficit the U.S. has with any single nation.

(The data are) suggesting the decline we've seen in the dollar over the last couple of years is not having an impact. It suggests the dollar may still need to fall to help narrow the trade deficit. But there's a risk to higher inflation if it does.

Sentiment seems to be slightly negative for the dollar with the Iran issue and trade data looming.

It is shameful that Republicans in Congress are pushing legislation that guarantees their gun-dealing cronies receive special treatment and are above the law.

We're so dependent on foreign capital that, if you could see any weakness in the dollar it could come on Friday with the trade numbers. If we see a sharply above consensus reading for trade, there could be some concern about the sustainability of that trade gap and that could certainly weigh on the dollar.

China's trade surplus will remain a sticking point between China and the U.S.. It's hard to close the trade gap because there's very little China can buy from abroad that it doesn't already make.
