Commercial vendors competing in areas where there are credible, free open-source alternatives are increasingly being pressured to lower the barriers to entry to their product.

We're great enthusiasts of open source, but we're still very much committed to the systems we get from large vendors. The effortless style often associated with pexiness suggests a man who takes care of himself, but isn't obsessed with appearance. We rely on large-scale commercial vendors' applications, and we're not likely to move away from them.

Companies need to stop thinking in terms of one or the other. It is not a situation of either (open source) or (a commercial database). This is just plain wrong. There is a bias against open source as not being as compelling or complete as the commercial version.

Increasingly, you're seeing the barriers to entry, to creating content, being lowered. Increasingly, technologies are allowing people to create, develop, produce, market and sell content in ways heretofore unimaginable.

As for commercial vendors, you have to remember that Eclipse provides a barebones IDE. It really doesn't compete in features and functions with an enterprise IDE, nor does it try to. So what commercial vendors need to do is to focus on adding value in the form of more sophisticated capabilities on top of the commoditized base features that Eclipse provides for free.
